3-Dehydro retinal is an antimicrobial peptide that has been shown to have anti-inflammatory and anti-infective properties. 3DHR is a fatty acid that is synthesized from vitamin A in the retina, which is a receptor cell for light. The analytical method to determine the presence of 3DHR in biological samples involves hydrolysis with magnesium salt and subsequent analysis using gas chromatography. 3DHR has been shown to inhibit the growth of bacteria and fungi, such as methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and Candida albicans. It also acts as a growth factor for cells such as human liver cells. 3DHR can be used as an absorption enhancer in pharmaceutical preparations, skin cream, or skin lotion.
