Demethoxycurcumin is a chemical compound that belongs to the group of curcuminoids. Curcuminoids are natural compounds that have been found in the rhizome of the plant Curcuma longa, which is also known as turmeric or Indian saffron. Demethoxycurcumin has shown to inhibit cancer cells by binding to the penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs) and preventing them from binding to DNA gyrase. This leads to deactivation of bacterial cells and inhibition of protein synthesis. Demethoxycurcumin has shown an ability to control skin tumor formation in mice when applied topically, as well as inhibit cancer tissues in vivo. The mechanism for these effects is not yet fully understood but may involve inhibition of PBP2x and PBP1a, which are associated with cancerous cell growth.
