This molecule can also act as an analgesic and antihistamine, which may be due to its ability to inhibit the reuptake of serotonin and norepinephrine in the brain. 4-(S)-1-Des(methylamine)-1-oxo-2-(R,S)-hydroxy sertraline can form two conformations: one with the hydrogen atom on carbon 1 (H1) in coplanar conformation with the adjacent carbonyl group (C1), and another with H1 orthogonal to C1. The former conformation is more stable because it minimizes steric interactions between H1 and C0/C3.
