Desferrichrome is a proton-donor that is structurally related to ethylene diamine. It has been shown to have inhibitory properties against the growth of coliform bacteria, such as Escherichia coli K-12. Desferrichrome is also able to reduce inflammation in the gastrointestinal tract by promoting the production of anti-inflammatory cytokines. Desferrichrome has low bioavailability, with only 9% of it being absorbed in the intestines. This low bioavailability limits its use in pharmaceutical preparations, but analytical chemistry techniques can be used to measure its concentration in plasma and other bodily fluids.
Desferrichrome's conformational properties are similar to those of cyclic peptides and amides, making it a good candidate for drug development.
