Desmethyl ranitidine is a prodrug of ranitidine. It has been shown to be effective in the treatment of cirrhosis, as well as chronic renal disease. The drug is metabolized by hepatic enzymes through a series of chemical reactions that convert it to its active form, ranitidine. The optimum concentration for desmethyl ranitidine is 20-40 μM and it is more bioavailable than its parent compound, with a low degree of interindividual variability. Desmethyl ranitidine has been shown to inhibit the activity of human liver microsomes and human serum preperations in vitro. It has also been shown to be an effective inhibitor of human cytochrome P450 2D6 (CYP2D6)
