R-(-)-O-desmethylvenlafaxine is a prodrug of the antidepressant drug venlafaxine. It is converted in vivo to the active form of venlafaxine, which inhibits the serotonin transporter. In this study, R-(-)-O-desmethylvenlafaxine was used to determine whether it has a greater effect on depression than on other symptoms such as hyperactivity in children. A gravimetric analysis showed that there was no difference between the groups for weight gain or changes in heart rate. However, there were significant differences in other parameters such as appetite and sleep patterns, highlighting the need for further research into the effects of this drug on children with depression and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).
