4,4'-Dicyanobenzophenone is a synthetic molecule that is used as a molecular building block to prepare ligands for organic light-emitting devices. 4,4'-Dicyanobenzophenone has been shown to have high optical efficiencies and can be used in organic solar cells. The x-ray study of this molecule revealed the presence of two dipole moments, one pointing up and the other pointing down. It also showed that the molecule has three sets of benzene rings with alternating single and double bonds. 4,4'-Dicyanobenzophenone was found to bind to a ligand with an aromatic hydrocarbon group and form a stable complex.
