Dihydrotachysterol is a natural product that has been shown to have antimicrobial activity against some bacteria and fungi. It also has an effect on the cell membranes of mammalian cells, causing lysis. In vitro assays have shown dihydrotachysterol to have a cytotoxic effect on human tumor cells. Dihydrotachysterol inhibits the polymerase chain reaction in human serum and experimental models, but only at high concentrations. This compound also has been shown to be effective against autoimmune diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis, systemic lupus erythematosus, and multiple sclerosis in mouse models. Dihydrotachysterol has not been studied for its effects on other types of cancer or cell growth in vivo.
