1,5-Diiodo-3-oxopentane is a synthetic derivative of curcumin that has been shown to be effective in treating hepatitis. 1,5-Diiodo-3-oxopentane is a prodrug that undergoes an intramolecular cyclization reaction to produce the corresponding active form, which inhibits the progesterone receptor and is used for the treatment of HIV infection. This conjugate binds to the progesterone receptor and blocks its ability to bind with progestogen, preventing the formation of progesterone. 1,5-Diiodo-3-oxopentane may also be used as a therapeutic drug against inflammatory diseases such as arthritis.
