It inhibits the adenosine A receptor and blocks the synthesis of cyclic AMP. PPX also has an inhibitory effect on the synthesis of cyclic GMP in the brain, which may be involved in its effects on locomotor activity. PPX has been shown to have inhibitory effects on both cardiac and cerebral adenosinergic transmission. This drug is used as a model system for studying neurotransmission and cell lysis in humans.
