4,6-Dimethyl-2-hydroxypyrimidine HCl is an unsymmetrical organic compound that utilizes X-ray crystallography to determine its x-ray crystal structure. It has been synthetically prepared from menadione and purified by crystallization from water or acetone. 4,6-Dimethyl-2-hydroxypyrimidine HCl has been shown to be a vitamin precursor in a number of biological systems, including the synthesis of pyridoxal phosphate for use in amino acid metabolism. 4,6-Dimethyl-2-hydroxypyrimidine HCl is also a potential antiobesity agent due to its ability to inhibit fatty acid synthase. This activity may be related to the observed antagonism of the enzyme by binding to its cofactor NADH.
