Dimethyl 2-nitroterephthalate is a solvent that is used in pharmaceutical formulations. It has been shown to be reactive with red blood cells and can cause hemolysis. Dimethyl 2-nitroterephthalate can also react with radiation, such as ultraviolet light, leading to the production of tyrosine kinase. This reaction can lead to the formation of thioxanthones and ethylene glycols, which are toxic compounds. Treatment for these complications may involve amines or functional groups such as those found in polyethylene terephthalate (PET) or polyester.
