Diethyl phenylmalonate is a polycarboxylic acid that functions as an inhibitor of the enzyme carboxylesterase. This drug is used in the treatment of autoimmune diseases, infectious diseases, and eye disorders. The inhibition of carboxylesterase leads to increased levels of malonic acid, which can cause metabolic acidosis. Diethyl phenylmalonate has a carbonyl group that reacts with hydrogen fluoride to form diethyl fluoromalonate. In addition to its function as an inhibitor of carboxylesterase, this drug also inhibits hydroxylation reactions, such as those involved in fatty acid synthesis and the production of epoxides from alkenes. Diethyl phenylmalonate can be used as a pharmaceutical preparation or solid catalyst for transfer reactions.
