Diethylcarbamazine is a medication used to treat filariasis, a parasitic infection caused by thread-like worms that live in the body's lymphatic system. Diethylcarbamazine inhibits the transcription of DNA into RNA by binding to the polymerase chain reaction and prevents RNA from being synthesized. It also has been shown to stimulate the production of colony-stimulating factor (CSF), which is involved in immune response. Diethylcarbamazine has been used as an alternative treatment for diabetic neuropathy that cannot be treated with other drugs because of their side effects.
