Dichloro(1,5-cyclooctadiene)platinum(II) is an organometallic compound with a variety of uses. It can be used in the preparation of other organometallic compounds and as a catalyst in cross-coupling reactions. This compound has been shown to react with aryl halides to produce soluble and insoluble complexes. Its viscosity is high, which makes it difficult to use as a ligand or solvent. Dichloro(1,5-cyclooctadiene)platinum(II) is synthesised by heating platinum metal and dichlorocyclopentadiene at 400°C for 12 hours. The crystallography of this substance was studied using x-ray diffraction. It was found that the substance spontaneously crystallises from the melt at temperatures above 120°C.
