4-(Dicyanomethylene)-2-methyl-6-(1,1,7,7-tetramethyljulolidinium) (DCJ) is an aromatic hydrocarbon that has a skeleton of alternating single and double bonds. DCJ emits light when it is excited by ultraviolet light or by visible light. DCJ can be used as a semiconductor material to create devices such as LEDs and lasers. DCJ also has the ability to emit red fluorescent light when it is exposed to nitrogen atoms. One example of the use of DCJ is for patterning silicon wafers for the fabrication of microelectronic devices.
