Dibutyltin oxide is a disulfide compound that reacts with organic compounds containing a hydroxyl group and a reactive metal, such as ethylene diamine, to form a high-resistance polymer. In vitro tests have shown that it is resistant to hydrochloric acid and trifluoromethanesulfonic acid. Dibutyltin oxide has been shown to react with 4-dimethylaminobenzoic acid in the presence of an alkali hydroxide. The reaction mechanism is thought to be either an addition or substitution reaction.
