Disodium dimercaptomaleonitrile (DM) is an antimicrobial agent that is used to treat cancer. It has a carbonyl group and a disulfide bond, which are necessary for the production of DM. DM is synthesized in the cavity of an iodine crystal by reaction with the photochemical intermediate bis-carbonyl-diazo-squaric acid. The reaction intermediates are synchronous fluorescence and nitro, which have been found to be carcinogenic. DM has been shown to be effective against squamous carcinoma cell lines in vitro and liposomal formulations of DM have also been shown to be effective against certain types of cancer cells in vivo.
