It is an analog of p-terphenyl and is a reactive, colored compound that activates carbenes. 4,4'-Diiodo-p-terphenyl reacts with hydrocarbons to form reactive singlet carbene intermediates. These intermediates react with other molecules to form coupling products. The dimeric structure of this compound can be used to make analogues of p-terphenyl.
