1,2-Di(4-pyridyl)ethane is a fluorescent compound that emits light when irradiated with UV light. It has been shown to inhibit the production of nitric oxide in liver cells and to interact with DNA polymerase chains by forming hydrogen bonds with the complementary bases in the DNA molecule. The x-ray crystal structures of 1,2-di(4-pyridyl)ethane show how it binds to its complementary base pair, adenine. This binding causes a change in the coordination geometry of the nitrogen atoms at one end of the molecule and a shift in electron density from one side of the molecule to the other.
