Acetonitrile is used as a solvent during the synthesis, which may be due to its ability to activate the methyl group on 3',5'-dimethylacetophenone. Kinetics studies have shown that 3',5'-dimethylacetophenone can react with benzoyl chloride at room temperature in less than 10 minutes, while at higher temperatures it takes only a few seconds.
