It has the chemical formula CH3OCH2C6H4CH3. 3,4-Dimethoxytoluene is used as an intermediate in the synthesis of a variety of organic compounds including olefins, polymers, and pharmaceuticals. It can also be used to extract fatty acids from plant oils and animal fats. The extraction yield increases when using this compound as an extraction solvent. 3,4-Dimethoxytoluene is synthesized by reacting benzene with formaldehyde in the presence of a Friedel-Crafts catalyst such as aluminum chloride or zinc chloride.
