2,4-Dichloro-6-methyl-3-nitropyridine (2,4-DMCNP) is a ligand that binds to DNA and can be detected using radioactivity. It has been used in the study of DNA methylation by binding to methylated cytosine residues. 2,4-DMCNP is used in the synthesis of radiolabeled nucleotides and in the preparation of antibodies for use in immunohistochemistry. The specific activity of 2,4-DMCNP is very low, which means that it has a relatively low number of radioactive atoms per molecule. It also has a low molecular weight (low density), which makes it more suitable for use as a tracer than other molecules with higher molecular weights.
