Dinitrofluoromethane (DNFM) is a synthetic chemical that is used to reduce other functional groups. It is typically used in the reduction of nitro and amino groups. DNFM reacts with an electron donor, such as sodium borohydride, to produce dinitrogen tetroxide and hydrogen fluoride. The reaction can be represented by the following equation:
DNFM + NaBH → DNT + HOF
DNFM has been shown to react with a variety of electron donors, including sodium borohydride, potassium borohydride, lithium aluminum hydride, and lithium tri-tert-butoxyaluminum hydride. The reduction products are hydrogen gas and nitrogen dioxide gas. DNFM binds to anions such as sulfate and phosphate through hydrogen bonding.
