2,3-Difluoro-4-hydroxyphenol is an efficient method for the synthesis of fluorinated alkenes. The chlorination can be carried out with aqueous chlorine in the presence of a catalytic amount of acetic acid. This method is advantageous because it does not require the use of toxic and expensive fluorine gas. 2,3-Difluoro-4-hydroxyphenol is a monosubstituted carbonyl compound that contains a hydroxyl group and a fluorine atom at the 2 and 3 positions respectively. It has been shown to have liquid crystal properties in both its solid state and when dissolved in water. In addition, this compound has been used as a starting material for the synthesis of cyclic compounds.
