3,5-Difluorosalicylic acid is a fluorine-containing organic compound that has been shown to have tuberculostatic activity. It binds to the active site of the enzyme mycolic acid synthase, which is required for the synthesis of mycolic acids in bacteria. The chemical structure of 3,5-difluorosalicylic acid includes a nucleophilic carbon atom and a reactive fluorine atom, which can be used as an oxidizing agent. This drug has been shown to inhibit protein synthesis in laboratory tests using methoxide as a reactant. 3,5-Difluorosalicylic acid is efficient at targeting Mycobacterium tuberculosis because it inhibits mycolic acid biosynthesis.
