The drug 2,5-dioxopyrrolidin-1-yl 8-[(4-fluorophenyl)methylamino]-8-oxooctanoate is a monoclonal antibody that blocks the toll-like receptor (TLR) 4. TLR4 is an immune system receptor that plays a key role in the development of autoimmune diseases. The drug binds to the extracellular domain of TLR4 and prevents it from inducing the production of inflammatory cytokines, such as TNFα or IL-6. 2,5-dioxopyrrolidin-1-yl 8-[(4-fluorophenyl)methylamino]-8-oxooctanoate also blocks intracellular calcium levels by inhibiting phospholipase A2, which is responsible for activating NFκB.
