9-Ethyl carbazole is a heterocyclic compound that has been shown to be an inhibitor of the enzyme nitrite reductase. It forms a hydrogen bond with the copper chloride in the active site of the enzyme, thereby inhibiting the formation of nitric oxide. 9-Ethyl carbazole also inhibits other enzymes related to nitrite metabolism, such as cd-1 mouse liver cytochrome C reductase and methylamine dehydrogenase. This inhibition may be due to its ability to bind to these enzymes in a similar manner as nitrite reductase, forming a hydrogen bond with the copper chloride in their active sites and preventing them from performing their enzymatic functions. 9-Ethyl carbazole has been shown to inhibit methemoglobin formation in vitro and picolinic acid levels in vivo.
