Descrição:N-Ethyl maleimide is a cytosolic calcium chelator that binds to the calcium ions in the cells. It has been shown to inhibit the enzymes of fatty acid synthesis and phospholipase A2, which are involved in lipid metabolism. N-Ethyl maleimide is an irreversible enzyme inhibitor and can be used as a chemical tool for cell sample preparation. The reaction with N-ethyl maleimide leads to a decrease in water permeability of the cell membrane. This chemical also has a high affinity for sulfhydryl groups and can therefore be used as an anti-oxidant or free radical scavenger.
