It inhibits the replication of human mitochondrial DNA and herpes simplex virus type-1 (HSV-1) by binding with the viral nucleic acid. 5-Ethyluracil has been shown to be an effective antiviral agent in clinical trials, where it was found to inhibit the replication of HSV-1 in both HIV-positive and HIV-negative patients. 5-Ethyluracil has also been shown to have an inhibitory effect on mammalian cells and has been used for treatment of certain types of cancer.
