Ethyl 2-amino-5-phenylthiophene-3-carboxylate is a medicinal compound that has shown to be an adenosine agonist. It binds to the A1 adenosine receptor, which is found on vascular smooth muscle cells and plays a role in mediating vasoconstriction. Ethyl 2-amino-5-phenylthiophene-3-carboxylate may be used for the treatment of hypertension by blocking the binding of adenosine to its receptors. This molecule also has shown to have antioxidant properties, which may be due to its ability to inhibit peroxidation of membranes. Ethyl 2-amino-5-phenylthiophene-3-carboxylate has been synthesized from cyanoacetates and thiophenes in a ternary complex with adenosine as an intermediate. This complex was used in medicinal chemistry assays that revealed that ethyl 2 amino 5
