Ethyl 2-(2-oxocyclopentyl)acetate is a chiral compound with a boiling point of 78°C. It can be synthesized by the reaction of ethyl formate and cyclopentanol. This process is catalyzed by zirconium chloride and diethylene glycol. The yield of this process is high, and the product has a high enantiopurity. This organic compound is used as an intermediate in organic synthesis, specifically as an activating reagent that promotes nucleophilic attack on carbonyl groups in various substrates. It also has been used to produce ethyl 4-chloro-3-methylbenzoate and ethyl 4-chloro-3-methylbenzoic acid, which are used in the synthesis of drugs such as clozapine and lorazepam.
