5-Ethyl-4-methyl-4H-1,2,4-triazole-3-thiol (EMT) is a potential redox system that can reversibly change between the oxidized and reduced forms. It functions as an electron donor in the reduction of hydrochloric acid and thermodynamic reactions. The EMT molecule has a redox potential of -0.41 V, which is in the range for reversible reactions at room temperature. The redox system EMT can be used as a stepwise electrode with a reversible redox reaction and constant equilibrium constants. This molecule has formation constants that are dependent on temperature and nature of the solution. At higher temperatures, EMT will form more readily in solutions with high concentrations of chloride ions, while at lower temperatures it will form more readily in solutions with high concentrations of sodium ions.
