Ethyl 3-(4-chlorophenyl)-3-oxopropanoate is a chemical compound found in the plant Piper longum, which is used in traditional medicine to treat malaria. This compound has shown antiparasitic activity against plasmodium falciparum and leishmania. It inhibits the formation of protein moieties that are required for parasite growth by inhibiting casein kinase and farnesyltransferase, enzymes involved in protein synthesis. This mechanism of action may be due to its ability to inhibit the human farnesyl transferase enzyme. Ethyl 3-(4-chlorophenyl)-3-oxopropanoate also has been shown to modulate other proteins that are involved in the proliferation of parasites, such as casein and trypanosomal protein kinases.
