Ethyl 4-methylphenylacetate (EMPA) is a chlorinated aromatic compound. It can be synthesized by reacting diethyl succinate with sulphur chloride in the presence of catalysts such as titanium tetrachloride. EMPA has been shown to have cardiovascular benefits, such as reducing blood pressure and inhibiting the accumulation of lipids in arteries. The reaction time for this compound is typically around 10 minutes. EMPA's synthesis can also be carried out using hetero-catalysis, which is the use of a catalyst that is not one of the reactants or products.
