(-)-Epiafzelechin is a flavonoid extracted from the leaves of the plant E. acoroides. It is a white crystalline powder that has been shown to have antioxidant properties, inhibiting mitochondrial membrane depolarization and scavenging anion radicals. (-)-Epiafzelechin has been studied for its effects on primary cells in a model system and has been found to be cytotoxic, inhibiting the growth of herpes simplex virus by blocking viral protein synthesis. (-)-Epiafzelechin also inhibits acetate-induced DNA damage in primary rat hepatocytes, which may be due to its ability to inhibit lipid peroxidation.
