- Ethyl 1,3-thiazole-5-carboxylate
Ethyl thiazole-5-carboxylate (ETC) is an antifungal agent that belongs to the group of carboxylic acid derivatives. It inhibits the growth of fungi by binding to ergosterol, which is a component of fungal cell membranes. The reaction time and ring structure of ETC are similar to those of thiabendazole, an antifungal agent that has been used in the past. This drug can be used as a screening tool for new antifungal agents with a broad spectrum of activity against bacteria and fungi. ETC has shown antibacterial activity against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, although at different concentrations. The inhibitory concentration for ETC on microbial growth varies from 0.1-0.2 mg/ml for subtilis (a type of Gram-positive bacteria) to 50 mg/ml for Aspergillus flavus (a type of fungus).
