4-Ethylbenzenesulfonic acid (4EBS) is an unsaturated alkyl sulfonic acid. It is a reactive inorganic compound that has been used as a model system for studying the uptake and reaction of hydrocarbons by bacteria. 4EBS reacts with nitrogen atoms to form inorganic nitrates, which are then transformed into sulfates. The inhibitory effect of 4EBS on bacterial cells may be due to its ability to react with proteins and nucleic acids. The reaction mechanism is complex and not well understood, but it is thought that the initial step involves the formation of an adduct between 4EBS and sulfur dioxide (SO2). This leads to the formation of sulfonic acid intermediates that react with proteins, DNA, and RNA.
