2-Ethyl-5-nitropyridine is a heterocyclic compound with the chemical formula C6H8N2O. It is a pyridine derivative, which means it has a nitrogen atom in the ring structure and contains six carbon atoms in total. 2-Ethyl-5-nitropyridine is used as an intermediate in the synthesis of other compounds. The rhodium(III) salt of 2-ethyl-5-nitropyridine can be used to selectively reduce acetaldehyde oxime to give substituted nitroindoles. The substituents on these nitroindoles are then converted to pyridines, piperidines, or other heterocycles by reductive cyclization reactions.
