3-Ethyl-5-methylphenol is an aromatic hydrocarbon that is a reaction intermediate in the synthesis of 2,5-dihydroxybenzoic acid. This compound has two functional groups: an aromatic hydrocarbon and an acidic group. 3-Ethyl-5-methylphenol can be used as a substrate for polyethylene terephthalate production, which is catalyzed by ethylene. It adsorbs at high temperatures and has a fluorescent property. 3-Ethyl-5-methylphenol can react with hydrogen atoms to form 3-hydroxybenzoic acid homologues.
