3-(4-Ethyl-phenyl)-2,2-dimethyl-propionaldehyde is an organic compound that is used as a surfactant and a stabilizer in the synthesis of vitamin D3. It is also used in the manufacture of carotenoids, which are natural pigments found in plants and some other organisms. 3-(4-Ethyl-phenyl)-2,2-dimethyl-propionaldehyde can be synthesized by reacting ethylbenzene with chlorine gas in the presence of a cationic surfactant. The reaction products are then extracted with deionized water to produce an aqueous solution that can be easily converted to 3-(4-ethlyphenyl)-2,2-dimethyl propionaldehyde by reacting it with hydrogen chloride. This compound can also be produced from biomass or feedstocks such as corn oil or soybean oil by treating them with hydroxide ion in deionized water
