Alpha-ethyldeoxybenzoin is a polymerization inhibitor that is used in the production of cellulose. Alpha-ethyldeoxybenzoin has been shown to inhibit the activity of cytochrome P450 enzymes, which are involved in the metabolism of compounds such as drugs, hormones, and carcinogens. This inhibition can lead to increased toxicity or reduced efficacy of drugs. Alpha-ethyldeoxybenzoin also has reactive groups that can form crosslinks with DNA and other macromolecules, which may lead to cancer. Alpha-ethyldeoxybenzoin has been shown to cause tumors in rats when given orally and can be metabolized into polycarboxylic acid, which is thought to be responsible for its anticarcinogenic properties.
