The reaction proceeds with high yields and selectivity when using homogeneous catalysts such as ruthenium, which are able to catalyze both the ring-opening and the subsequent halide addition reactions. The transformation of 4-ethylcyclohexene to 4-propylcyclohexene can be carried out using protonation or nitrate. The conversion from 4-propylcyclohexene to 4-butylcyclohexene can be accomplished by oxidation with oxygen or peroxide, followed by hydrogenation, or by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry.
