1-Ethyl-4-(methoxycarbonyl)pyridinium iodide is a pyridinium salt that is soluble in formamide, hexane, and other solvents. It has been used as a reagent for the synthesis of pyridine derivatives and in studies on the interaction between alkylating agents and nucleic acids. 1-Ethyl-4-(methoxycarbonyl)pyridinium iodide reacts with formamide to give an adduct with a constant molar absorptivity at 240 nm. The compound is also known to react with hexane to give an adduct with a constant molar absorptivity at 240 nm. This compound has been found to be able to intercept the reaction of hexane with nucleic acids, forming a product that exhibits an absorption maximum at 240 nm. In addition, this compound has been shown to react with methyl chloride (CH3Cl), forming a product
