Endotoxin is a lipopolysaccharide (LPS) that is released by the Gram-negative bacteria, such as Escherichia coli. Endotoxins are potent activators of the immune system and are capable of inducing fever, septic shock, and multiple organ failure. The biological properties of endotoxin have been studied extensively and it has been shown to activate various cells in the body, including macrophages, which produce pro-inflammatory cytokines such as IL-1β and TNF-α. Endotoxin also induces neuronal death in the brain and can lead to intracellular targets within 3T3-L1 preadipocytes. It is also an experimental model for studying how LPS binds to Toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4).
