5-(2-Ethoxyphenyl)-1,6-dihydro-1-methyl-3-propyl-7H-pyrazolo[4,3-d]pyrimidine-7-thione is a potent antiviral agent that inhibits the replication of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) in cell culture. This compound binds to the viral reverse transcriptase and blocks the production of viral DNA. It also has an effect on cellular RNA synthesis. 5-(2-Ethoxyphenyl)-1,6-dihydro-1-methyl-3-propyl-7H-[3]-pyrazolo[4,3]pyrimidine is a nucleotide analogue that can be used to screen for other antiviral agents or food products. This drug has been shown to inhibit HIV replication by blocking reverse transcriptase activity and by preventing the formation of double stranded DNA.
