Ethyl (2-azidoethoxy)acetoacetate is a long-acting carbonyl group, which can be substituted with substituents such as an electron-withdrawing group. This compound has been found to be a potent calcium antagonist in the heart, and it is structurally similar to the dihydropyridine calcium antagonists. It has been shown to interact with the voltage-dependent potassium channels in smooth muscle cells. Ethyl (2-azidoethoxy)acetoacetate has also been shown to block L-type calcium channels, which are responsible for cardiac excitation and contraction.
