2-(4-Ethylbenzoyl)benzoic acid is a synthetic chemical that is used as an initiator for the polymerization of poly(ethylene terephthalate) with peroxide, carbon tetrachloride and zinc powder. It also has been used as a phase-transfer catalyst in organic synthesis. 2-(4-Ethylbenzoyl)benzoic acid is soluble in non-polar solvents such as chloroform, dichloromethane, and carbon tetrachloride. This chemical will react with chloride ions to form 2-(4-chlorobenzoyl)benzoic acid. The reaction time for this reaction is 4 hours at room temperature with ethyl formate or chlorine. The byproducts of this reaction are carbon dioxide and water.
