2-Ethylindole is a nanotube antibiotic with potent cytotoxic properties. It is synthesized by the reaction of dialkylamine and indole in the presence of nitrogen gas. The nitrogen atoms in 2-ethylindole are thought to be responsible for its inhibitory properties, as they bind to DNA and prevent the transcription of tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) mRNA. Its cytotoxic potency has been demonstrated in human cervical carcinoma cells and other cancers. 2-Ethylindole also inhibits energy metabolism and structural analysis, which may be due to its aromatic hydrocarbon ring system. This compound has been shown to have oral bioavailability and can be administered in a cream form for topical application on skin cancer.
