Ethyl 4,4,5,5,5-pentafluoro-3-oxovalerate is a fluorinated chemical that contains a hydroxyl group and a hydroxy group. The compound has been shown to have the ability to pattern the surface of poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA). It also reacts with pyridine compounds and lipid levels in the blood. The thermodynamic properties of ethyl 4,4,5,5,5-pentafluoro-3-oxovalerate are not well known because it does not exist as a stable molecule. Nitro groups can be added to ethyl 4,4,5,5,5-pentafluoro-3-oxovalerate by using nitric acid in an acidic solution. This reaction is called stepwise nitration.
